No angling challenge can compare
to a tarpon fly fishing charter. The fish are abundant on
the beaches from Charlotte Harbor north to Venice and Sarasota
and they often are in schools of monster-sized fish. Rolling
and milling in characteristic rituals as old as nature herself,
the captain's job is to put the angler within casting distance
of sighted fish. Once there, it is the angler's task to put
the fly in the path of moving fish, allowing it to sink just
enough to fall within the sight picture of the fish below.
A few quick strips and a hungry fish will attack and the fight
is on. From that moment on begins one of the wildest thrill
rides in all of angling. Fish of 100 pounds or more will leap
for their lives, alternating between blistering runs, tail
walking, somersaults and thrashing its head and body with
all the fury and power it can conjur. With the help of your
captain and a little skill and patience, your trophy of a
lifetime can be safely brought to boatside for a photograph
and a pat on the back before being released to fight again.
