These
varied and fertile fishing waters offer a wide range of species
including snook, trout, redfish, cobia, flounder and tarpon. Many
opportunities present themselves in Tampa Bay for traditional
spin and casting gear with artificials as well as for fly fishing.
In fact, anglers can experience all of these over the course of
a day's fishing.
The
abundance of deep water and shallow-water grass flats mean anglers
will enjoy a wide range of different types of fishing in Tampa
Bay. These varied and natural features make charters here a natural
for sampling much of what the Florida fishing experience is all
about. Over the course of a single day, anglers can be presented
with numerous unique fishing terrain and the bounty of gamefish
each has to offer. Another advantage of the variety
offered when fishing Tampa Bay is the possibility of scoring an
inshore "Slam," which consists of a snook, trout and
redfish caught the same day. Because all three species inhabit
about every part of the bay, all can be easily reached on a full
day trip.
Tampa Bay fishing charters depart from boat ramps close to the
intended fishing grounds. About 40 miles from my home waters of
Sarasota, we trailer for Tampa Bay fishing charters, which are
full-day trips only.
Charlotte
Harbor fly fishing is like stepping back in time. Its
miles of mangrove shorelines, shallow grass flats, sand and oyster
bars are home to snook, trout, redfish, tarpon and more. You will
marvel in the wildlife that is abundant there- white pelicans,
herons, egrets, ospreys, dolphins and manatees call this unspoiled
area home.
Rich in angling history and lore, these pristine waters are the
best Florida has to offer the saltwater angler looking for a pure
shallow water fishing experience. For sight fishing, the opportunities
are boundless. Gamefish slip through the clear water, rich with
the abundance of forage and crustaceans that inhabit every corner
of the expansive estuary. Fed by the ebb and flow of millions
of gallons of water passing each day through Boca Grande Pass
and the myriad smaller passes that open into the Gulf of Mexico,
Charlotte Harbor is nature at balance. It's no wonder it provides
some of the finest fly fishing in the state, and some might argue,
the world, making Charlotte Harbor fly fishing a must for all
fly anglers looking to enrich their angling experience.
With its bounty of food, the Harbor and its passes are the summer
home of thousands of giant tarpon. An annual phenomenon that goes
back as far as anyone can recall, the area is covered with silver
kings between late April and July and few places on earth offer
the genuine opportunities for hooking and landing the trophy of
a lifetime.
The harbor's snook fishing can be fantastic at times and when
the redfish are schooling anglers can enjoy some of the most rewarding
fishing available anywhere. Trout, cobia and pompano are among
the other fish on the Charlotte Harbor hit parade.
Since Charlotte Harbor is mostly very shallow, it is accessible
only by shallow draft flats boats. Wading the flats and sight
fishing is also a good option. If you are a fly fishing fan, there
are few waters that can compare and many opportunities for hooking
up with multiple species can emerge over the course of a full
day trip.
The harbor is about 40 miles from Sarasota, so we trailer
to these areas and launch close to the waters that we will fish.
Due to the distance, these are full-day trips only.
Sarasota
fly fishing in its bay and backcountry areas
is an anglers dream, offering a variety of opportunities. Its
unique combination of grass flats, mangrove shorelines, creek,
canals and passes make it a good year-around fishing area. Sarasota
fly fishing is about sampling the lush grass flats and mangrove
shorelines of North Sarasota Bay, where the fishing is great for
snook, trout and redfish. Three passes-Longboat Pass, New Pass
and Big Pass- flush the bay and provide seasonal action for pompano,
bluefish, sheepshead, jack crevalle and ladyfish. Little Sarasota
Bay provides a haven for many species of fish during the winter
and spring months. Oyster bars, docks and creeks make it a great
area for snook, trout, ladyfish, redfish, flounder or sheepshead
during cooler weather. Sarasota Bay is a beautiful bay that is
easy to fish due to many different types of habitat.
The bay is also a natural for fishing with light tackle
and artificial baits and in most cases sight fishing is not only
the most enjoyable technique but also highly productive. Likewise,
fly anglers enjoy many opportunities for everything from bluefish,
jumbo crevalle and ladyfish to snook, trout and redfish. The bay
is home to pompano, as well, which we target with spinning gear
and jigs.
The expansive grass flats of the area of the bay known as the
Middle Grounds are home to trout, pompano, cobia, bluefish and
crevalle. In the shaddow of the famous Ringling Mansion, the aptly
named Ringling Flat is well known for its good trout fishing.
The many sand and oyster bars on the east side of the bay are
recognized redfish and snook haunts.
Cobia are another bay resident. The brute of the Sarasota flats,
these powerful fish offer one of the biggest challenges we have
on light tackle.
In short, Sarasota offers a unique
taste of Florida fishing experiences and is sure to be a trip
to remember.
